Museum That Saved The World Poster

"In 2004, Joseph del Pesco created one of my favorite art projects in recent memory: he distributed a set of 500 posters, plainly printed in the style of old-fashioned boxing and concert posters, bearing the legend (in red letters on a white background): “The Museum that Saved the World.” As a curatorial intervention, it seemingly announced the title of a grandiose new venue or, equally, it might seem to designate the institutional affiliation of whichever environment it was placed in. On one level it poked fun at the Utopian claims espoused by curators who often use idealism as a tool of self-promotion; indeed, its antiquated appearance seemed to suggest that this kind of was a nostalgic historical relic. Yet on another level, the poster’s inexpensive production and free distribution conjured a democratic spirit of participation and activism."
